Legion Splits at Milan

After Post 285 showed some rust in its season opening 6-0 lost to Farmington last night, our bats finally showed some life in game 2 of the Saturday doubleheader at Sherrard High School. Post 285 lost the opener 5-2 and won game 2 by a score of 15-2.

Nick Milligan started on the mound for Galesburg in game 1 and took awhile to get settled in while walking 3 in the first inning. He managed to work his way out of the inning without a runner scoring thanks to pick off. Milligan managed his way through 5 innings innings only giving up 1 unearned run. Milan's bats came alive when reliever Carson Cheesman entered in the bottom of the sixth with a 2 to 1 lead. A couple ground balls found holes in our infield defense before a walk forced in a run. Luke Ryan got his first work on the mound in awhile and showed some rust while finishing the inning and allowing a couple inherited runners to score. Galesburg left the bases loaded offensively in multiple innings which could've produced some big innings early in the game.

In game 2 we took advantages of those situations. Nate Olin did a good job of getting things started at the top of the order. Nick Milligan had a key double in the 4 run first inning. Jesse Hines hit the team's first home run of the season and made several nice plays at shortstop. Tim Rossell did a nice job earning the win in 5 innings of work. Chans Sugden pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief.

It was good to see us finally show some energy and jump on top of an opponent early in the game. We've struggled adapting to this heat that has suddenly decided to show up. Hopefully we'll show some consistency tomorrow as we have our home opener at Sundberg field at 2:00 pm after myself and several other Galesburg baseball supporters participate in the Wes Corzette golf outing at Bunker Links to help support the Wes Corzette scholarship that goes to a senior baseball player each Spring. This year's winner is Cody Kukuk who is a very deserving recipient.
