Sophomores Need Extra Innings to Beat UT

After building a 4 run lead in the rain through 2.5 innings, the weather cleared up and our bats went cold as we only managed 1 run over the next 4 innings and with a couple of walks and defensive miscues found ourselves tied 5-5 after 7 innings. We found a way to get out of our funk and score two in the 8th to win 7-5.

Ryan Carl got the start and threw 2 perfect innings before running into some trouble in the third inning. Ian Milligan got out of the jam in the 3rd, but found himself in another jam in the 4th after the first 3 hitters reached base on an error, a walk and a single. Ian managed to get out of the inning with only 1 run crossing the plate in the inning and preserving the lead at 5-3. Jake Hannam threw a perfect 5th inning before walking the leadoff hitter and giving up 3 singles in the 6th that allowed UT to tie the game at 5-5. Chans Sugden threw a perfect 7th and allowed 1 walk while striking out the side in the 8th inning for the win. Drake Sykes and Logan Davis went 2-3 for Galesburg, while Tanner Guss was 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Jacob Thompson scored the eventual winning run in the 8th inning on a sac fly from Davis after reaching on an error.

We had several opportunities to break this game wide open, but we struck out looking 4 times. I believe they were all on breaking balls and we had several infield pop ups which required little work from the defense to record an out. We need to improve in these 2 areas if we are going to be successful against Alleman this weekend.
